Massachusetts beaches range from mountain lakes to ocean bluffs

Massachusetts beaches range from fresh-water lakes in the western mountains to the sandy flats of Cape Cod Bay and the towering bluffs of Martha's Vineyard. There's a perfect beach for everyone from small children playing in quiet tide pools to surfers riding pounding waves. Lodging for families, singles, and romantic couples is easy to find for a beach vacation in Massachusetts.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts manages a variety of beaches, from 15 saltwater ocean beaches to more than 50 inland, fresh-water beaches. Most are open between Memorial Day and Labor Day; many offer lifeguard services. Hours vary. Parking fees range from $5-15 (for residents at scenic and historic sites) to $20-40 per day (for non-residents at ocean beaches). An annual pass is $60 for residents only. Part of the Province Lands of the Cape Cod National Seashore. One mile from Provincetown. This portion of the Cape is building as a result of movement of sand from the glacial scarps to the south. The shoreline here drops off dramatically, allowing whales (and vessels) to come close inshore. Beautiful sand, gentle surf, fantastic sunsets. The four miles of white sand of Crane Beach form one of the most picturesque swimming beaches in all of New England, and is also among the world's most important nesting sites for the threatened piping plover. Rustic elevated boardwalks protect an extensive dune habitat complex. In-season visitors will find lifeguards and rangers, bathhouses with toilets and changing areas, outside showers, picnic tables, bicycle racks, the Crane Beach Store, and water fountains. Voted "Best Beach" by Best of Boston three years in a row.

The ocean beach is loved for its high dunes, beach grass, and silky sand. Windy, cool water, big waves. Life guards, restrooms, snack bar. There is a popular beachside restaurant, The Beachcomber, adjacent to this beach. You have to walk down a very steep dune to get to the beach below. May be difficult for oldest and youngest visitors.
Fees: Resident parking: $25 beach sticker; seasonal parking: $250 beach sticker; daily parking, $20 or $50 for three days; weekly parking, $85 (one week), $160 (two weeks). Buy stickers at 255 Commercial Street, Wellfleet. This beach also has a small parking lot behind the Beachcomber restaurant which is owned and operated by the restaurant but open for use by beach goers. Daily fee is $20; the small lot fills up early.

This beach has cool waters and tricky currents and a historic lighthouse. Huge stretch of sand with beautiful views and seal activity. It is best to walk to the beach from town (a short distance), or to ride bicycles or take a shuttle bus from town. No bathrooms, lifeguards or food service. Flagpoles at the top of the stairs warn the public of dangerous conditions. The red flag means swimming is prohibited.
To park along the Bridge Street road shoulder, nonresidents and non-taxpayers of Chatham must purchase a Chatham Beach pass and display on their vehicle. Parking passes are required July 1 through Labor Day from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. This requirement does NOT include parking at the Lighthouse overlook which is still available to all vehicles for short term parking only.

The Marconi Station Site offers a superb viewing area across this portion of the Cape from ocean to bay. Here, the outer beach is famous for its steep sand cliff located behind it. The uplands above the beach slope gradually westward, and provide a graceful vista of both the bay and sea horizons. Restrooms and bathhouse open seasonally. Watch for bicyclists along Route 6, and where the bicycle trail crosses the Marconi area entrance road. Located on Vineyard Sound, this is the longest beach in Falmouth, and is divided into an east side and a west side by a tidal stream that connects Bourne’s Pond to Vineyard Sound. Life guards; bathhouse, mobile snack bar; porta-johns; handicap ramp; beach wheelchairs.
Beach parking stickers are required only for parking your car in a town beach parking lot during the summer. You do not need a sticker if you walk or cycle to the beach. You do not need a sticker from mid-September through mid-June. Only Falmouth residents and visitors staying in Falmouth may buy a beach parking sticker.

One-half mile of over-sand vehicle trails and 4.5 miles of walking trails and sandy roads in upland area. Bird watchers can observe many species, including ospreys. Facilities include public restrooms, picnic tables, bike rack, soda machine at Wasque Gatehouse. Fresh water by hand pump in the parking area. The almost 1,000 acres of preserved land here – encompassing Wasque, Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge and Norton Point Beach – offer plenty of places to explore on one’s own, or with family and friends, year-round.

This beach, operated by the town of Wellfleet, is on the ocean side of Cape Cod, meaning that the water will be colder and rougher than on the Cape Cod Bay side. Ocean beaches offer opportunities for body and board surfing, boogie boards, and swimming. Surfing is permitted at town beaches outside of swimming areas. Hang gliders are restricted to White Crest Beach, and are allowed only before 9 a.m. and after 5 p.m.

Fees: Parking costs $20 a day per vehicle. Parking along Ocean View Drive is prohibited and subject to fine and towing.

Race Point Beach, one of the Cape Cod National Seashore beaches in Provincetown, is at the very tip of Cape Cod. Vistas around the point and of the Coast Guard station are magnificent. The ocean waves here can be big and rough, with a strong undertow. Weaker swimmers should stay in the shallow areas. Surfing allowed past protected area. Northern locations makes it great for sunbathing -- with nearly full sun all day. There are dunes behind the beach and easy access to bike trails. This beautiful beach faces Annisquam River and Ipswich Bay. A very long sandbar is exposed at low tide, offering gorgeous views and many walks among many tide pools and neighborhoods of aquatic life. Water is a bit shallow, so it’s warmer than you might expect. The walk from the parking lot is short and easy. Food, drinks, beach toys, and other beach necessities are sold at the concession stand. Restrooms and showers are available, daily, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. The beach is handicapped accessible and a beach wheelchair is available.
Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. Surfing, inflatable objects and all flotation devices are prohibited during the day. Alcohol is prohibited. Carry In-Carry Out policy requests visitors to remove their own trash.
Parking: $30 per vehicle and on the weekends and $35 per vehicle on holidays. Fees may be reduced after Labor Day. Lot has handicap parking spaces.
Directions: Take Route 128 North to Exit 13. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Concord St and follow for about one mile. Watch for a traffic island with a sign saying "Wingaersheek Beach." Turn right onto Atlantic Street and follow to the end.
Pavilion Beach

This beach is located on the eastern end of Stacy Boulevard, a very short walk from the center of the city and Fort Point". Parking is very limited and there are no restrooms. Porta–Potties are available a short distance away on the boulevard. Alcohol is prohibited and the beach is not guarded.
Pavilion Beach is also the home of the famous Greasy Pole Challenge and a blessing of the fleet held during the world-renowned St. Peter’s Fiesta celebrated each June to honor the patron saint of fishermen. (It was postponed in 2020 because of COVID-19.), St. Peter.
Directions: Take Route 128 North into Gloucester. At Exit 12, take the first right off of the rotary onto Washington Street. In 1 mile, Washington Street becomes Middle Street. Take the first left on to Angle Street and then right onto Commercial Street. Turn left to stay on Commercial Street. Pavilion Beach will be on the right.

Nauset Light Beach consists of a broad, sandy beach that is contained by a steep glacial scarp behind it. During winter months, the beach profile is considerably lowered, sometimes exposing features such as the brick foundation of one of the earlier Three Sisters lighthouses. Coast Guard Beach is a prime swimming beach in summer. Just across the harbor from Edgartown is a small beach with 705 feet of sand and splendid views of the harbor on Chappaquiddick. There are two beaches; one faces the inner harbor, the other looks out toward the outer harbor and Nantucket Sound. Both offer small lapping waves. Not suitable for swimming due to harbor traffic. Take the Chappaquiddick ferry to gain access to the beach.

Popular beach on Cape Cod Bay offering the bay’s calm, warmer waters. Expansive tidal flats at low tide expose pools of sea creatures. Westward direction of the beach offers wonderful sunset views. Life guards, restrooms, food, wheelchair accessible.
Fees: Parking is free for town residents with a permit. For non-residents, daily parking fee in $15 and can be purchased at the beach from mid-June to Labor Day. Non-resident stickers for visitors staying in Orleans are $60 a week, $110 for two weeks, and $125 for the season. Stickers may be purchased at the Nauset Beach Administration Building.

Quincy Shore Drive on this Reservation runs from Wollaston Beach to Caddy Memorial Park to Moswetuset Hummock. The 2.3 mile beach is popular for swimming. Caddy Park has a play area for kids and many acres of fields and marsh, as well as picnic sites. Hummock, on the beach's northern end, is a mixture of woodland trails and open marshland. The site has views of Quincy Bay and 144-acre Squantum Marsh. The Reservation may be reached by Boston MBTA trains. Open year round, dawn to dusk. Bathhouse open July to September.

This beach, in Hyannis Harbor on Nantucket Sound, is considered one of the best Cape Cod beaches for windsurfing, with good winds all through the season. The beach is divided into two sections, to keep windsurfers away from kids and families. Very popular for windsurfing. Life guards, bathhouse, picnic area, snack bar, volleyball area, wheelchair access. Operated by the town of Barnstable.
Fees: Parking permit is required. Fee for non-resident parking sticker is $15 a day, $50 a week, and $200 for the season. Daily permit may be purchased at the beach; weekly and seasonal permits must be purchased at the National Guard Armory, 225 South Street, Hyannis.
Bay View Beach

Beach is on Lewis Bay at the end of Bayview Street. Handicap access. Seasonal Porta-John. No lifeguards on duty. Operated by the town of Yarmouth.
Fees: Non-resident beach sticker fees are $15 for the day, $70 for the week, and $175 for the season. Seasonal beach stickers are available at the Yarmouth Town Hall, 1146 Route 28, South Yarmouth, and at the Chamber of Commerce, 424 Route 28 West Yarmouth.

Calm, shallow water. The beach begins near the Steamship Authority dock and terminates at the first jetty heading toward Edgartown, at the end of the breakwater, marked by a fence. The beach continues again about one mile southeast of the small inlet flowing into Sengekontacket Pond, and ends at Joseph Sylvia State Beach. Open to all.

Nickerson Beach is a very small beach which primarily serves the adjacent Squantum residential neighborhood of Quincy. This scenic coastal area, with its extensive salt marsh and mudflats, is attractive to birds and for bird watching. Owned by the City of Quincy. Access: Most access is by foot or bicycle, although limited curbside parking is available. The area is also accessible via public transportation. Take the Squantum #211 bus to the Bellevue Road & Dorchester Street stop from the MBTA Red Line's North Quincy station.

A calm north shore beach with good shells and sea glass. Includes a seagull nesting area, and is a favorite fishing spot. Pleasant and protected. Open to all, but parking is very limited.

Madaket Beach

As far west as you can go on Martha's Vineyard, Madaket is a popular beach, especially for watching sunsets. Madaket Beach is accessible by bike via a 5.5 mile paved bike path, or take the NRTA shuttle bus (seasonal).
Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.The western most tip of the beach is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicle. Smith's Point is at the very end of Madakat and reachable only by four-wheel drive vehicles, permit required. Sometimes the point is breached by waves to create Esther Island. Beach vehicle permit fees range from $50 to $200 for the season.

Town beaches run the full length of the Provincetown's waterfront. This beach, parallel to Commercial Street, the main thoroughfare, is a few steps away from the heart of downtown. Park at the public lot at MacMillan Wharf. The West End Beach is most popular for swimming.
Hardings Beach

Hardings Beach is the largest family beach on the Lower Cape. It faces south on Nantucket Sound and has warm and calm waters. The beach has two parking lots, three life guard stations, a bathhouse, and food trucks. The beach has places to play beach bocce ball, volleyball, and wiffle ball. A hiking trail extends behind the beach from the second parking lot. You can launch a sailboat or kayak any place outside the swimming area.
Fees: Beach stickers for non-resident parking are $15 a day, $60 a week, and $125 for the season. Non-residents may purchase stickers with cash at the beach booth. Resident and taxpayer stickers are $25. Residents may can purchase stickers at the booths or at 261 George Ryder Road.
Nantasket Beach Reservation

Nantasket Beach has been a popular summer destination since the 1850s. The reservation covers 25 acres across more than a mile of ocean shoreline. Daily parking fee is $10 for Massachusetts-registered vehicles and $12 for out-of-state vehicles

This beach is on Vineyard Sound and it is accessible from Shining Sea bike path. You do not need a sticker if you walk, cycle, take a taxi, etc. You do not need a sticker from mid-September through mid-June. Only Falmouth residents and visitors staying in Falmouth may buy a beach parking sticker.

This beach is on a secluded inlet of Buzzard’s Bay, and it looks out on the Bourne entrance to the Cape Cod Canal. Large beach with lots of room; volleyball space; bathrooms; concessions; life guards. Salt water is calm. Lots of passing boat traffic to watch. Plenty of parking.
Fees: Must have a sticker to park and stickers are sold only to people who can show proof of a 30-day temporary residency in Bourne. (All others may bicycle or walk to the beach.) Stickers are $40 a week and $60 for two weeks. You can buy a sticker at the Natural Resources Office, Town Hall, 24 Perry Ave., Buzzards Bay.
Surfside Beach

Surfside is one of the most popular beaches for families and children, but note that the surf can get heavy at times. People often picnic, fly kites, build sandcastles, and surf cast for fish on this beach. Surfcasting is allowed after 5 p.m. Amenities include lifeguards, restrooms, showers, a food shack, equipment rentals, parking. Beach is accessible for people with disabilities.
The beach can be reached via a two-mile ride on paved bike path or by the NRTA Shuttle in summer only. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport.

Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge

Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge is known for its historic lighthouse, white sand beaches, and world-class fishing. Rolling maritime dunes cover more than 200 acres. Refuge includes 16 miles of over-sand vehicle and walking trails and beach front. Gray and harbor seals feed in the Great Point riptide. Facilities include public restrooms between the Wauwinet Gatehouse and Great Point Lighthouse and at the lighthouse. Both are open May 1 to October 31. Bike rack at the Wauwinet Gatehouse. Seasonal tours of the Great Point Lighthouse and the natural wonders of the refuge. Hours: Year-round, daily, 24 hours (10 p.m.-5 a.m. - fishing access only). Cost: Free to all pedestrians and boaters.

Norton Point

This 2.5-mile-long strip of sand and dunes linked Martha's Vineyard and the island of Chappaquiddick until 2007, when a storm breached in the barrier beach. This beach provides opportunities for shellfishing, swimming, bird watching, and picnicking. In the autumn, the sandflats are used by migrating shorebirds. There are 1.8 miles of oversand-vehicle trails and 4.5 miles of walking trails and sandy roads in the upland area.
Due to strong currents and riptides, swimming at Norton Point Beach can be hazardous. Use caution at all times. The breach can be particularly dangerous. Stay at least 10 feet away from the edge of the breach and obey all posted signs.
Open year-round, daily. Dogs must be kept on a leash. Free access for pedestrians.

Duxbury Beach is a sand barrier six miles in length, extending from Marshfield to Gurnet Point and Saquish (part of Plymouth). Life guards, bathhouse, restrooms, showers, ice cream, snacks, and Blakeman’s restaurant.
Access" People with parking stickers (resident and oversand) should go to the beach via the Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury. People who want day parking at the Duxbury Beach Park should go through Marshfield and take Canal Street to Gurnet Road in Duxbury.
Parking Fees: Daily fee is $15 per car. Non-resident parking stickers for the season are $294-$325. Contact Town of Duxbury.

Off-road vehicles are allowed; permits must be obtained through the town of Orleans. Life guards; restrooms; food concession.
Fees: Parking is free for Orleans residents with a permit. For non-residents, daily parking fee in $15 and can be purchased at the beach from mid-June to labor Day. Non-resident stickers for visitors staying in Orleans are $60 a week, $110 for two weeks, and $125 for the season. Stickers may be purchased at the Nauset Beach Administration Building.

Half Moon Beachis a small quiet beach with good swimming waters. Lots of boat traffic to watch. Life guards on duty daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Bathrooms and picnicking areas are nearby. Parking costs $10 on weekdays and $15 on weekends and holidays. The beach is handicapped accessible with a concrete ramp to the sand. Cressy's Beachis sand and rocks and less crowded by Half Moon. Less good than Half Moon Beach for swimming and better for solitude, reading, and walking.
Fees: Parking costs $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends and holidays. Stickers for the season also my be purchased from the town of Gloucester.
Corn Hill Beach

A lovely spot with calm water and scenes of sailboats, the Chappy ferry, and fishing boats. Gentle waves on the outer part of the beach are safer for small children. Seldom crowded and a short walk from North Water Street. Just a short distance from downtown, offers pleasant swimming conditions and a view of the harbor and lighthouse. Take North Water Street to Starbuck's Neck.

Sconset, on the eastern shore of the island, is a beautiful beach (especially for early risers who catch the sunrise). It often has rougher waves because it faces out into the open Atlantic. Lifeguards watch over the beach; this are not food concessions or restrooms. Bus service to the beach in summer.

Red River Beach

On Nantucket Sound Beach, this is the largest beach in Harwich with lifeguards and bathrooms. Food is from an ice cream truck that visits often. Good beach for kayakers, sailors, and fishermen who want easy access to Monomoy Island and its refuge.
Directions: Several roads from Route 28 reach Red River Beach. Uncle Venie's Lane is the best choice. Do not take Red River Road (it is a dead end and does not reach the beach).
Fees: Parking pass is required between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Non-resident parking is $15 a day; $20 a day weekends; one week, $65; two weeks; $125. You may buy a pass at the beach. Resident parking is $25 a day or $140 for the season. Buy stickers at Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak Street.

Carson Beach, which is well-maintained by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, is one of the best swimming beaches in the area with nearby public amenities and great views of the harbor. The park has walkways, benches, lighting, shade shelters and award winning landscaping which have helped to make it a popular destination. "Mother's Rest" and its fishing pier have also been rehabilitated, making for a beautiful picnic area with a fantastic view of the Harbor. Life guards on duty.
Mass Transit Access: Take the MBTA Subway's Red Line to JFK/UMass station. Or use MBTA Bus routes 5, 8, 11, 16, or 41. Parking available.

Fort Independence has two main hiking trails; 1.8-mile Pleasure Bay Loop, overlooking scenic Pleasure and Dorchester Bays, and .79-mile-long Castle Island Loop, which leads you in a ring around the Fort. At the bridge between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven is this small beach area, just about a half-mile outside of Oak Bluffs downtown area. It's good for swimming or fishing.
Plymouth Beach

The entrance to Plymouth Beach is just past Plimoth Plantation (137 Warren Avenue). Life guards through the summer but not past Labor Day. There are restrooms and a snack bar at the beach. From April 1 through September 30 leashed dogs will be allowed on Ryder Way and the beachfront from the main parking lot north to the day parking area, excluding areas closed for shorebird nesting.

Menemsha Public Beach

Has a nice sandy beach on the North side of Martha's Vineyard. There is limited public parking, and public restrooms with showers. There is gas and fuel available for both car and marine use. The harbormaster's office, a small market, shops, a couple of fishmarkets, fishing shacks, thriving fishing charters, restaurants, deli and transient boat docking make Menemsha a popular summer destination.

This is a small beach on Lewis Bay, part of Nantucket Sound, with a marina and a jetty. Wheelchair accessible. Open 8 a.m.-10 p.m.

Lynn Shores & Nahant Beach Reservation

Four miles of waterfront offers swimming at Long Beach and King’s Beach. A public walkway for walking, jogging, and bicycling extends for two miles across the reservations, facing Nahant Bay. Lots of packed sand is visible and accessible at low tide at King's Beach and Long Beach on Nahant Bay. Visitors also enjoy the sand dunes along Long Beach and tide pools at Red Rock Park. West Dennis Beach

Located on Nantucket Sound east of the Bass River, this beach is great for families and all manner of beach activities from body surfing to volleyball. The Bass River Lighthouse is located nearby. The eastern end of the beach is for town residents only; the west end is for the public. Life guards, restrooms, paid parking, snack bar, showers, wheelchair accessible. Dennis beach map.
Fees: Resident beach stickers, $40 per year; non-residents: $20 weekdays and $25 weekends and holidays; $75 for a weekly; $300 for the season. Buy stickers at Dennis Town Hall, 485 Main Street. Beach stickers are required the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
Seagull Beach

Long Beach

Off Route 127A (Thatcher Road) to Long Beach Road Gloucester and Rockport, MA Phone:

Beach is long, flat and sandy with a easterly view that includes the two lighthouses on Thatcher's Island. Beach crosses the border of Gloucester and Rockport. From Gloucester, go past Good Harbor Beach to the fork at Rockport Road. Near here are some small private paid parking lots a short walk near the beach. There is no public parking on the Gloucester end. From Rockport, take Route 127A to Seaview Street and the parking lot there. Rockport beach sticker is required here. Beach has life guards.
Fee: Rockport parking sticker is required. Buy it at the Rockport Chamber of Commerce (Main Street) or Rockport Town Hall (Broadway). It is $25 per season.
Brant Point Beach (on the island of Nantucket)

Located right at the Brant Point Lighthouse, this is not really a beach for swimming. There is some sand but the currents are very strong with lots of boat traffic and there are no lifeguards or restrooms. This is a nice place to sit and watch the boats go by or the artists painting the lighthouse, but swimming is not recommended.

First Encounter Beach

Third week of June to Labor Day; warm & calm water; good for families; great sunset views

First Encounter is a beautiful, calm beach with warm gentle water and a small patch of grass. The tide goes way out, and the colors at sunset are spectacular. The water temperature is in 60 to 70 degrees in summer, and the mild waves are ideal for young children. The ice cream truck comes by several times a day. There is a bathhouse, and a good size parking lot. This is a very popular spot to see the sunset. Operated by the town of Eastham. Visitors may buy a sticker or pay by the day to park at the beach. Buy stickers at 555 Old Orchard Road, Eastham, or Sunday only at the First Encounter parking lot. No lifeguards.
Fees: One weekday, $15; one weekend day, $18; one week, $65; two weeks, $100; shellfishing $25 and $65. Stickers are non-transferable and non-refundable.

Life guards, restrooms, food concession, wheelchair access, and beach wheelchair. large parking lot.
Fees: Daily, $15; weekly, $50; season, $200. Daily permit may be purchased at the beach; weekly and seasonal permits must be purchased at the National Guard Armory, 225 South Street, Hyannis.
Bass Hole or Gray’s Beach

This beach on Cape Cod Bay, operated by the town of Yarmouth, offers a picnic area with grills and a playground, pavilion, lifeguards, restrooms. Water is very calm; good for young children. Beach adjoins the Callery-Darling Conservation Area, which offers trails through wetlands, woods, and a boardwalk over a salt marsh.

South Cape Beach State Park

Day-use beach with boardwalks, bathrooms, salt and fresh water bodies

South Cape Beach is a great swimming area. The property is wedged between Vineyard Sound and a saltwater bay. It has a barrier beach and dunes, a salt marsh, pine woodlands and small freshwater ponds. A white sand beach more than a mile long faces Vineyard Sound. Dune boardwalks, a small parking area and bathrooms are provided. This park is part of the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, which offers nature programs during the summer. Cape Cod National Seashore Beaches

Open: Parking lots are open daily, year-round, 6 a.m.-midnight. Life guards are at swimming beaches from late June through August.

Cape Cod National Seashore manages six ocean beaches in the following towns: Eastham (Coast Guard and Nauset Light beaches), Wellfleet (Marconi Beach), Truro (Head of the Meadow Beach) and Provincetown (Race Point and Herring Cove beaches). All seashore beaches include showers, paved parking, rest rooms, changing rooms, drinking water, water quality testing, and lifeguards (late June through Labor Day). Squibnocket Beach

Squibnocket Road Martha's Vineyard, MA Phone:

Squibnocket faces the Atlantic and is known for heavy surf. In fact, it may have the most consistently powerful surf of all the Martha's Vineyard beaches. A well-established local surf spot, the beach if fairly rocky. A Town of Chilmark residential permit is required here for beach access during the summer season. No public parking is available. Directions: Located in Chlmark, Squibnocket is accessible via seasonal shuttle bus service.
Dionis Beach

Eel Point Road Nantucket (on the island of Nantucket), MA Phone:

This beach is three miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Road off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.”  Lifeguard (in season), restrooms, and parking. Good seashell hunting. Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children. There is no food concession. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Road stop and walk.

Horseneck Beach State Reservation has handicap-accessible beaches. At the western end of Buzzards Bay lies a two-mile beach area. Pets not permitted on beach.
Katama Beach (also known as South Beach)

This is a stretch of three miles of barrier beach on the South Shore at the end of Katama Road. Fine surf with strong waves on one side and a sheltered salt pond on the other. Open to all. Vehicles with permits allowed on marked trails.
Dogs are allowed during the summer, only after 5 p.m. From mid-September to mid-April, dogs are allowed all day. Dogs must be leashed and people need to clean up after their pets.
Miacomet Beach

End of Miacomet Road, South Shore Nantucket (on Nantucket), MA Phone:

At the end of Miacomet Road. Surf and rip currents can be dangerous. Parking. No facilities or food service. Families with very young children may prefer the fresh-water Miacomet Pond. At the pond there is parking; no lifeguard, no facilities. Watch out for snapping turtles.
